Our Wish List

We have a wish list of all the places on our best beach list we have yet to see.  Like many other marriages, in our 30 years together we have survived a number of serious struggles.  The fact that we have weathered the tough times and are still together makes our wish list especially special to us.  Afterall, isn’t it our hopes and dreams for the future that keep us going sometimes? My brother, who is a minister and a published author, has been a tremendous help to us in weathering the tough times through sharing his unwavering faith and his beliefs in the value of hope and its importance in the survival of the human spirit and our relationships.

(If stories on the subjects of hope, positive thinking, and an unwavering belief in the value of every human life are of interest to you, please visit Dr. Hammer’s blog and see his available publications at

We don’t know how many of the places on our list we will ever be able visit; perhaps that’s why it’s called a wish list; but we want to share with you photos and information we have gathered as we have dreamed and planned Our Beach Wish List.  Our sincere hope is that the results of our research are enjoyable and helpful to you in some way as you plan your vacations to the beaches on your beach wish list!  (And if you happen to get there before we do, we congratulate you, celebrate with you, and welcome your beach photos and stories!)

#1 Wish on our Best Beach List:

The number one destination on our wish list of places to see someday is Alaska.  My husband and I had always said that if we made it to 30 years together we would go on an Alaskan Cruise a few months before our 30th Anniversary.  (Our anniversary is in December, but just as an FYI, due to extreme weather conditions and a limited amount of daylight for several months during the year, Alaskan Cruises are only available from May through September.)  The Alaskan Cruise didn’t happen, for a number of reasons; but it’s at the top of our wish list of big vacations and we may get there someday!

I know we won’t be coming back home with a tan, but isn’t Alaska GORGEOUS!!?

My husband will want to go on a Safari, but my number one priority in Australia will be to get a scuba diving refresher course (it’s been awhile!) and get down to that amazing Great Barrier Reef!

Some of our neighbors have been to Bermuda and give it five stars! In addition to being gorgeous, you can visit Bermuda with the assurance that this is one of the safest places in the world to be.  (They are very strict on crime there so the crime rate is almost zilch!  That sounds like a good policy for other countries to adopt.)

Costa Rica

Our Insurance Agent gave us a “two thumbs up”  on Costa Rica.  He recently visited Tamarindo Beach and absolutely loved it!  Isn’t it absolutely breathtaking??? I wanna go . . . .

Another place I’ve heard so many good things about . . . .

Palomino Island, Puerto Rico

I’m not sure we would have ever thought about going to Greece, but our son and daughter-in-law spent their honeymoon there and their stories and photos easily convinced us to put Greece on our wish list:

  Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro has been on our wish list for years, probably ever since I first saw the movie, “Blame it on Rio”. (Don’t think we will be doing the “topless beach” thing, but I would really like to visit Rio some day.)

Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro

Belize is another destination we might not have thought about, but our daughter-in-law’s family was so impressed with Belize that it is now on our wish list!

Cabo San Lucas

We know of several couples who were married in Cabo San Lucas and tell us it’s a marvelous wedding (and vacation) location!

Acapulco is known for being “a city that never sleeps.”  And if one is so inclined to take in everything the city has to offer, it certainly sounds as if it lives up to that reputation!  If you like the night-life, you’re in for a treat since many of the bars, clubs and discos stay open until the last guest leaves, which is often around sun-up!  I don’t know about all of that; but I think I could easily spend day and night enjoying the beach and the views.  The bay of Acapulco is a natural horseshoe shape with hills and cliffs framing each side, creating amazing views.  The night views in Acapulco are said to be among the most beautiful sites in the entire country.  We were only a little more than 100 miles from Acapulco when we visited Puerta Vallarta, but I still want to go someday and see what all the talk is about!

Fiji has also been on our wish list for years.  Some friends of ours just couldn’t say enough about it after their vacation there!

The Island of Fiji

Canary Islands

I have heard so many good things about the Canary Islands that it’s another must-see for us someday.

The Canary Islands are located just off the west coast of northern Africa in the North Atlantic Ocean. There are seven islands in all, of Spanish origin, and more than 500 beaches!  The climate is described as sub-tropical “eternal spring,” with temperatures averaging between 68 and 72 degrees (considerably cooler in the winter months and as warm as the mid-80′s in the hottest month of July).  Oh, and guess what the Canary Islands are most popular for: scuba diving and underwater photography! I know where I’ll be going to dive someday!

Playa de Cofete, Fuerteventura, Canary Island

Madagascar is another place we have heard so much about we just have to go see what all the talk is about!

We have heard that Corpus Christi is a beautiful, must-see beach!

Corpus Christi

Galveston, Texas

The Galveston Hurricane in 1900 has been of interest to me for a number of years now.  I seem to have somewhat of a fascination with weather patterns, especially hurricanes; it’s an interest I inherited or learned from my Dad, I think.  If you are interested in the subject of hurricanes, or specifically the Galveston Hurricane of 1900,  I highly recommend the book, “Isaac’s Storm“, by Eric Larson. The story of all the events of that tragedy is such a sad one; maybe part of the reason I feel compelled to visit there is to somehow “pay my respects . . . .”  But Mr. Larson tells the story in such an informative, educational and fascinating way that he makes it a great read.  Galveston, Texas is definitely on our beach wish list!

I would love to see the California Coast someday! (The closest we have ever been is when we flew over the state going to Hawaii and back.  An interesting bit of information: California is only half-way from here in East Tennessee to Hawaii!)

Where else can you go snow-skiing (in Northern California) and then get a tan swimming or surfing at the beach (in Southern California) in the same state during the same day? That is amazing to me!  There are so many places we want to see in California that we would just need to fly out there, rent a car, and drive from North to South; but these are some of the beaches on our wish list:

A beach near the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz

A Beach in Santa Monica

A beautiful beach in Malibu

Sunset at the Huntington Beach Pier

  Laguna Beach

Early morning at a beach in San Diego

(Special note: A heartfelt Thank You to our son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Ashley for sharing priceless photos from their amazing trips to Greece, Belize, and Cabo San Lucas!)
